Basics of Gulf Coast Cone Penetration Testing
Geotechnical reports and subsurface investigations provide builders and engineers with a view of what is happening below your feet. The geotechnical engineers at GeoCon have a number of state of the art tools that help provide you with an accurate picture of subsurface conditions. We use Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) to determine the geotechnical characteristics of the subsurface soils. CPT is a staple of geotechnical reporting and is in heavy use by the US Geological Services.
There are multiple geotechnical characteristics that CPT can help you assess. Geotechnical characteristics include soil strength, compressibility, stability, friction angles, and groundwater elevations. The cone has friction sleeves and tips that produce computerized logs of the subsurface soil’s above described characteristics in 2 centimeter intervals. GeoCon uses the state of the art S4 CPT Sounding System and it is mounted on a wide track Caterpillar skid steer. We also have a sampler that connects to the cone rods which allows us the capability to obtain samples from multiple depths. We can do split spoon type samples or small plastic tube samples.
Our machine is very unique due to its size and being track mounted. It is very mobile and we can access areas with soft and wet ground. We are an economical option on sites that are wooded and or wet/soft. Simply put, GeoCon Engineering can get subsurface samples where other geotechnical engineers cannot go.
